It’s the time of year we’re thankful for our AC. There’s nothing much more satisfying than walking into a nice, cool house after being out in the sweltering heat. If you find that your system is not getting your home cool enough, there could be a few reasons. It could be unusually hot outside, or may be stalled filters or dirty coils, or even your thermostat. But, it may be that the system is low on refrigerant. There are some warnings you can look out for to let you know that your refrigerant is running low and that it’s time to call in a professional for air conditioner service.
Higher Utility Bills
An air conditioner that is lacking refrigerant will have to be on longer in effort to cool your home. This results in higher utility bills. If you’ve noticed abnormally high bills it could perhaps be time to call someone in to check out your air conditioner.
Ice Buildup or Water
If you notice any ice on your exterior AC unit, there’s a probability that there’s an issue. When you’re low on refrigerant, your system’s evaporator coil might get too cold and the moisture surrounding your refrigerant line will freeze. This could lead to compressor problems. If your compressor becomes damaged, and it’s not under warranty, it’s may be more cost effective to change out the whole outside unit.
Your Home Isn’t Cool
If your unit is taking longer than it typically does to cool your home or if it’s not getting to the temperature set on your thermostat, your greatest bet is to have your system checked out. There are a number of things that could be taking place that a technician would be able to diagnose.
